Key Terms / Vocabulary

  • Benefit Period
    • The length of time during which a benefit is paid.
    • Begins the day you’re admitted as an inpatient in a hospital or SNF. 
    • Ends when you haven’t gotten any inpatient hospital or SNF care for 60 days in a row
  • Coinsurance
    • Your share of the cost for services after you pay any deductibles, usually %

    • State Medicaid office covers remaining balance.

Medicare vs Medicaid

  • Medicare is federal health insurance for 
    • Anyone age 65 and older 
    • Some people under 65 with certain disabilities or conditions
    • People of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant) 



  • Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that provides health coverage for some people with limited income and resources.  

 

  • Medicaid offers benefits, like nursing home care, personal care services, and assistance paying for Medicare premiums and other costs.
